Only 2.6 miles from the Holiday Inn® Burbank-Media Center you find Griffith Park. This 4,000-acre crown jewel is home to numerous attractions and an abundance of hiking trails. Enjoying everything the park has to offer would take an entire vacation in itself. However, you definitely want to squeeze in a little time there during your visit. This overview will give you a brief idea of what this unique park has to offer.
- Griffith Observatory – One of the most exciting free things to do in all of California is visit the Griffith Observatory. Not only is it an astronomy museum, planetarium, and space observatory; it also offers unparalleled views of the Hollywood Sign and the downtown area.
- Golf – There are four municipal courses at the park. Two are 18-hole courses and sit adjacent to one another. These are Harding Municipal Golf Course and Wilson Municipal golf Course, and both have a driving range, putting green, and other amenities.
- Hiking – The park traverses over 4,000 acres of canyons and mountains. There are 53 miles of paved and dirt roads. It is easy to get turned around on the trails so make sure someone knows where you are going in case they don’t hear from you, and carry more water than you think you need. It doesn’t hurt to pack a snack, too. The hike to Mt. Hollywood from Griffith Observatory is the most popular trail.
If you are like most people, you have a little more stress in your life than you would like. You need time to kick back and just laugh. It’s good for your health! Whether you are staying at the Holiday Inn® Burbank Media-Center for a vacation or if you are in town for business meetings, a few hours of laughter should be penciled into your to-do list.
The first thing you will notice is the layout. There really is not a bad seat in the place, so do not worry about trying to get in the front row. Alternately, don’t assume that the comedians won’t “pick” on you just because you found a discreet seat in the shadows.
Flapper’s was opened in 2008 and has become one of the most popular comedy venues in the state. The shows are interactive and hilarious; the two ingredients for success.
The list of comedians that perform at Flappers is quite extensive. It does not matter what day you visit you are pretty much guaranteed to have a good time. Quite often there are a lot of comedians in the audience, too.
You do not have to see a night show either. On most days, shows start at 5 pm so you can have dinner and enjoy a show, and then have a night on the town. Of course, you can always catch a late-night show at 11:30 pm, too, if you are more of a night owl.Details
If you have time to actually watch a movie at the TCL Chinese Theatre it is definitely recommended. However, movie or not, taking a tour of this venue is a must. This is where some of the hottest events and movie premiers have taken place all the way back to 1927. It is one of the world’s most famous movie theaters, primarily because of the cemented hand and footprints of countless celebrities outside. You are probably saying that you thought the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre was the name of the historic cinema on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Well, you are absolutely right! It is the same theater. Interestingly, from 1973 to 2013 it was actually called Mann’s Chinese Theater, but most have never been able to let go of the original “Grauman’s” name.
After the Grauman’s Egyptian Theatre opened in 1922 and proved to be successful, this Chinese theater was opened. “King of Kings,” “Star Trek,” and many of the most popular films of all times were released here.Details
Nestled on the north slope of the majestic Verdugo Mountains, La Tuna Canyon Park covers 1,100 acres and offers one pretty strenuous hike. You will get your heart pumping and really feel the burn as you make your way to the top, but it is a nice, exhilarating jog going down. Plus, at the ridgetop you are awarded with breathtaking views of the San Fernando Valley, San Gabriel Mountains, Burbank, and Downtown Los Angeles.
Finding the Trailhead
It is actually quite easy to find the trailhead and there is plenty of free parking there. If you are coming off 210 Freeway take exit 14 for La Tuna Canyon Road. You will find a dirt lot just past the 210 East on ramp on the south side of the road. Lock your vehicle and do not leave any valuables in it.
The first thing you need to know is that this is a 7.5-mile round trip hike. This may not seem like a big deal if you are an active person, but the hike also includes a 1,400-foot elevation gain to reach Verdugo’s 3,126-foot summit. This is not a recommended hike for inactive individuals. There are plenty of other parks where you can take a casual stroll.Details
During your stay at Holiday Inn® Burbank-Media Center you absolutely must try to pencil in a day to spend at Universal Studios Hollywood. Originally nothing more than an interesting studio tour, this place has morphed into a popular theme park. Of course, you can still take that iconic studio tour, but visiting now is a full day of adventure. Universal Studios Hollywood puts you into some of your favorite movies. It also offers a nice selection of fantastic shops and restaurants.
Universal City was opened by Carl Laemmle on March 14, 1915. For only a nickel, visitors could tour the studio and this price included lunch. At the time, the attraction was in a rural farm area, so you could even buy produce while you were there. In 1930, the tours had to be canceled due to the introduction of sound films.
In 1962, Music Corporate of America took over and suggested starting a new tour to increase profits, and in 1964 one was started. It took guests through sets and dressing rooms, and even allowed peeks at active production. Through the years it has turned into an amazing theme park.Details
