To bridge the wide geographic gap between large cities located on the east coast and west coast cities such as Los Angeles, the United States government embarked on a highly ambitious project during the 19th century. The goal of the project was to link the large commercial centers of the country by rail. Commemoration of the decade’s long railroad projects has come in the form of several railway museums located throughout the United States. Considered the model for all railway museums, the RailGiants Train Museum located in Pomona, California is a must see for the entire family.
Railway and Locomotive Historical Society
Founded in 1921, the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society is considered the oldest railway historical preservation group operating in North America. The goal of the society is to “promote research and encourage preservation and documentations of all facets of railroading.” The first exhibit opened by the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society was in 1954. Since 1954, seven more locomotives have made appearances as part of the rolling stock at RailGiants Train Museum. The focal point of the activities at the museum is the former Santa Fe Railway station designed and built in Arcadia, California. The 1987-constructed railway station features Victorian architecture and a collection of Railroadiana.
What You Need to Know
RailGiants Train Museum opens only on the second full weekend of each month. The limited schedule means the museum is typically packed with railroad history aficionados. Hours of operation on both Saturday and Sunday run from 10am until 4pm. The museum closes on Easter and Mother’s Day, as well as when Christmas falls on a Sunday. During the open weekend days on the second weekend of the month, visitors spend time viewing all of the rail cars and locomotives. The museum operates the Depot Gift Shop, where visitors purchase souvenirs to remember their visits. Each locomotive includes stairs that allow you to look inside of the cabs. RailGiants Train Museum does not charge an admission price, which is another selling point that attracts large crowds. The cost of maintaining the railway equipment comes from private donations.
At the Los Angeles County Fair
Starting on Labor Day, the Los Angeles County Fair runs until the last weekend of September. During the Los Angeles County Fair, RailGiants Train Museum operates an exhibit that offers you a convenient way to view some of the railway historical artifacts presented at the museum. For nearly 20 days, you have the opportunity to visit the museum, without having to pay admission. The admission price you pay to enter the fair takes care of the visit to the RailGiants Train Museum exhibit.
